June 19 marks Juneteenth, a day of remembrance of the African American culture, specifically Emancipation Day or Freedom Day.
On June 19, 1865, General Order No. 3 was read by Union General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas. The order informed enslaved Africans in America that they were free.
On June 15, 2021, the Senate unanimously passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday in the United States of America.
The US federal holiday, Juneteenth, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas — two months after the Confederacy had surrendered.
Every year we must remind successive generations that this event triggered a series of events that one by one defines the challenges and responsibilities of successive generations. That's why we need this holiday.
Let us commemorate Juneteenth and what it means for our Community!
Juneteenth is the first federal holiday established since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.
